As the long summer days get shorter and children return to school, September often feels like a line in the sand. Increasingly, the start of September is being recognised as a “second New Year” in our annual cycle; perfect for setting goals, establishing routines, and tackling the tasks that may have been pushed aside during the summer months.
Just as many of us use January to commit to resolutions, September offers another opportunity to take stock of both our daily lives and also longer-term plans.
Here, we look at why September is the ideal time to review your affairs from a legal perspective.
We all know that time goes by quickly, and as time passes, changes can occur in our lives. A new home, marriage, divorce, children, grandchildren, or even changes in financial circumstances can affect how you might want your estate to be managed or who you would trust to make decisions on your behalf. That’s why September, with its renewed sense of focus, is an ideal time to review your:
- Will – Does it still reflect your wishes, family circumstances, and assets?
- Lasting Powers of Attorney (LPAs) – Have you appointed people to make financial or health decisions if you are unable to do so? If you already have LPAs in place, are you still happy with your chosen attorneys?
- Trusts and Inheritance Planning – Do your arrangements still offer the most efficient protection for your family’s future?
Without a valid will, your estate will be divided according to the rules of intestacy, which may not reflect your wishes. Similarly, without an LPA in place, your loved ones could face costly and time-consuming applications to the Court of Protection simply to help manage your finances or make health decisions if you lose capacity.
By getting these documents in order now, you can provide clarity, reduce uncertainty, and offer peace of mind for yourself and your family.
