The local area.
Delph is a village in Saddleworth, Oldham, situated on the River Tame and nestled amidst the Pennines. The village, which derives its name from the old English word meaning ‘quarry’, is packed full of old-world charm, as the centre has mostly stayed the same since the 19th Century.
Opened in 1851 as part of the London and North Western Railway Route from Oldham to Delph, Delph Railway Station closed in May 1955. The line was called the “Delph Donkey,” allegedly due to a claim that the original service was a carriage drawn by a donkey (although this claim has never been proven). The railway track was removed in 1964 and became the Delph Donkey Trail, a popular walking and cycle route, with the stations of Dobcross and Measurements marked by replica station name boards.
Delph is home to the Saddleworth Hotel, a prestigious venue overlooking the picturesque Castleshaw Village, popular for weddings. This family-owned hotel was the site of the first wedding under the new law announced in 1995, allowing marriages to occur in venues other than churches and registry offices.
The Old Bell Inn in Delph was built in 1797 and named after its tenant, William Bell. During its lifetime, it was a post house on the trans-Pennine route, but nowadays, it is a hotel, restaurant, brasserie, and bar. The Old Bell Inn proprietor, Philip Whiteman, holds a Guinness World record for the largest number of commercially available gins—over 1000 are on display in the ‘Gin Emporium’!
Delph and Dobcross Cricket Club members are The Old Bell Inn fans, as their ground is just down the road. They also have various events in their clubhouse when they are not busy playing in the Huddersfield League. The club is known for being a pioneer of guest appearances of professionals in the league and as a founder member of the Saddleworth & District Bowling League in 1924.
The cricket club also hosts the annual popular “Party in the Park” family music festival. The event aims to raise money for charity by entertaining people with a line-up of top musicians and bands. There is also hot food and a beer tent.
Delph is also home to a thriving local arts community, which uses Millgate Arts Centre as a base for art exhibitions, concerts, films, and theatre performances. The Delph Cooperative Society built it in the 19th Century but is now run by Saddleworth Players.
