The local area
Mossley is a town in the Metropolitan Borough of Oldham, located in Greater Manchester, England. It is situated in the foothills of the Pennines and lies along the River Tame. The town is surrounded by stunning countryside, including the Peak District National Park to the east and Saddleworth Moor to the north.
Historically, Mossley was a mill town, with cotton mills, paper mills, and ironworks among its key industries. Today, the town still has a thriving community and economy, with various shops, pubs, and restaurants to serve its population – as well as the popular Ian McConnell Vet. Mossley also has a railway station, which provides convenient access to Manchester and other destinations in the region – and is a stop on the famous Transpennine Ale Trail.
The town has a rich cultural heritage, and several landmarks and historic buildings can be found in the area, including the Georgian-style Manor House, the Mossley Railway Viaduct, St. George’s Church and St. Joseph’s Church and School. Hartshead Pike, another well-known local landmark, is a hill whose name is associated with the Tower monument on its summit.
The George Lawton Hall is the local hall which is home to the Mossley Amateur Operatic and Dramatics Society (MAODS), of which our Director Claire Egerton is the Treasurer and an active member of. The hall is also used for other events as well, such as weddings, funerals and voting.
Sport is quite a popular activity in Mossley, with Micklehurst Cricket Club, Mossley AFC and Mossley Running Club being based here. We have close links with Mossley Running Club and are a sponsor of Mossley AFC (The Lilywhites). The popular secondary school Mossley Hollins also won the FA Challenge Trophy (in 1980).
Mossley is also home to various community events and festivals, such as the Mossley Food and Drink Festival, which takes place annually and showcases local produce and cuisine.
