The local area
Surrounded by the beautiful Saddleworth Moor, Uppermill sits on the Huddersfield Narrow Canal on the edge of the Pennines. There are lots of lovely walks down the canal that take in the Saddleworth Viaduct along the way. Another famous landmark is the Pots and Pans Monument, a rock formation at the top of Aldermans Hill overlooking Uppermill.
Uppermill has plenty to offer sports lovers, such as the Churchill Playing fields stretching from Bridge Street, Uppermill, to Wellington Road, Greenfield. These playing fields cover about 7.8 hectares, making them the largest in Saddleworth. They also include a multi-use game court, a skate park, and a tennis court.
Oldham is also traditionally the home of Morris Dancing – a form of English folk dance based on rhythmic stepping. Saddleworth has its group of Morris Men who practice at The Church Inn, Uppermill, every Thursday Evening. Saddleworth Morris Men also take part in the Rushcart ceremony every August. This tradition sees them gathering rushes for strewing on the church floor and returning them to St Chad’s Church at Uppermill. It is quite a sight to see, as the 13-foot high cart tours local villages accompanied by around 100 morris men from all over the UK and a band!
Another popular festival is the Yanks’ annual military show and vehicle parade, with forties-themed entertainment and historical displays across Uppermill and Dobcross. This weekend was established as a nod to the filming of Yanks, a Richard Gere film, which was shot in the area in 1979. It’s a great day out.
